As America approaches its 250th birthday, I am sitting at home on the very ground where Americans first stood their ground at the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse, now Freehold, birthplace of one Bruce Springsteen. We are becoming happily intoxicated by the goodwill of the World Cup and are happy to turn away from the embarrassments (take your pick) of Washington DC.

I am struck by a parallel between the rise of the middle powers and its potential to remake the global order and the rise of the American middle class, peaking in mid 20th century, which enabled America to play a dominant role in establishing a world order. In both cases a tyrannical aristocracy (King George and the P5) had to be overcome. It is my hope that the middle powers will lead the UN in drafting a new Declaration of Independence from the P5 which has obstructed global progress toward true peace and prosperity since the end of WWII.
